i did mine like at around 2006 nov. n though the color is still there my hair is growing n thus i have to cut it short with which the color itself will have to leave.

it takes about 6 to 8 months to fade out
Fading in hair dye mostly has to do with the condition of your hair although colors in the red family fade a lot faster than most other colors.

If you condition your hair regularly and use color protecting shampoo and conditioner your hair color will last a lot longer. Those color glazes, such as John Frieda, also really help extend your dye job,

Using a lot of heated styling tools causes more hair damage and tends to cause hair to fade quickly.

UV from the sunlight can also cause dramatic changes in dyed hair (I'm a marine biologist and I love to dye my hair so I have a lot of experience with this)

If you really hate a color and want to strip it faster (this only works when you darken hair) you can use dish soap. This works as a ultra clarifying shampoo. I've done this to strip out a lot of red but it leaves your hair REALLY dry so you'll have to deep condition immediately and leave the conditioner on for at least 15-20 minutes.
